  • Hello! Are coming to vote?
  • Yes sir, I am!
  • I think I'm going to vote for John Breckinridge.
  • _____________ John Breckinridge  ________________ John Bell _______________ Stephen Douglas
  • A man went in to vote for the new president in the Election of 1860.
  • Did you hear? Lincoln wasn't even on the ballot!
  • Really? That's wonderful! He'll never win!
  • He was a southerner who supported slavery, so he decided he wanted to vote for John Breckinridge.
  • He made his choice, and noticed something interesting about the ballot.
  • What a shame. Lincoln won.
  • This is outrageous! We shall secede from the Union at once!
  • I don't care what the north says! Slavery is necessary! Those northerners are getting on my nerves!
  • Later that day...
  • He spread the word to his fellow slavery supporters.
  • Abraham Lincoln still ended up winning the election, even though he wasn't on the ballot in 10 states.
  • And the winner of the 1860 election is... Abraham Lincoln!
  • The southerners were furious with this outcome. They seceded from the Union. Things only got worse between the north and the south, and the war was getting closer. They no longer wanted to be a united country with each other.
  • And so the tension grew...
