  • Congratulations people of the Revolution. This is the first mark of our overthrow of the government. As we will now destroy the Bastille.
  • King Louis XVI sent troops to Paris to defend the Nobles which made revolutionaries angry so they attacked the biggest prison in Paris which was also a huge symbol of royalty, The Bastille. They ended up completely destroying the building, some with bare hands. The revolutionaries took gunpowder to help themselves fight in future battles. This event is commonly known as The Storming of The Bastille.
  • Women in France were growing increasingly angry due to the rising cost of bread. One day they decided that they had enough and launched an attack on the Palace of Versailles where the royals live. This is commonly known as the March on Versailles.
  • They picked Marie Antoinette as a particular enemy due to her being very flamboyant with her money instead of giving it back to the people. Marie Antoinette ended up escaping the March of Versailles despite the women wanting her head.
  • The Reign of Terror was an age in France that followed the Old Regime. During this time twelve people governed the country. They were a group called the Committee of Public Safety, this group had a standout leader, Robespierre, a philosopher who helped Enlightenment reach France. The Committee of Public Safety were also in charge of prosecuting people of treason, a crime punishable by death by guillotine. They could prosecute anyone for things as small as saying something slightly anti-revolution, and that they did.
  • Napoleon's rise to power began with him at a French military school. From there he joined the military where he eventually became a general. After his extreme military success he and part of his army walked into the French governmental building and declared him emperor of France, and just like that he ruled the country. Once in charge he reformed many parts of the revolution such as reinstating censorship and making him and his family all powerful.
  • In conclusion the French revolution was more a failure than success. It didn't hurt the French democracy nor help it, after a while things went right back to a patriarchy under Napoleon. Getting rid of the king was somewhat worth it as the Committee of Public Safety (despite being multiple people) and Napoleon both ruled France like dictators. The Committee of Public Safety there was even mass death of innocent people. However, maybe without overthrowing king France would've never stopped being patriarchal.
