A story about a girl who wants to spend more time with her mother, who is constantly busy with her talk show on the radio. What do you think Amanda will do to get her mother's attention?
Gather 'round, class, time for a story. Once upon a time, there was a mother and daughter who never got to spend time together because her mother was always running her talk show on the radio.
One day, the daughter, Amanda, decided to call the talk show, pose as someone else, and try to get her own mother's advice on how Amanda can get her mother's attention. Ironic, isn't it? So, she calls her mother on the show and says her name is Claire (which is her middle name). She gets to talk to her mother over the phone and she asks how she could get her mom's attention.
Her mother, Dr. Emma Hart, suggests that Amanda takes her mother out to lunch so they can catch up. Amanda realized that Dr. Hart's idea wouldn't work because her mother had had a bad day and Amanda didn't want to make her day worse by giving her problems to her mother.
So she decides to call the show back later. When she does, she tells Dr. Hart that her idea didn't work. Dr. Hart asked if 'Claire' had even tried. Amanda admitted to not doing so but she explained why. She explained that her mother had been busy and a little stressed when she got home and she accidentally mentions her 'Wounded Birds' which is what Dr. Hart calls her patients.
Dr. Hart then realizes that all this time, she had really been talking to Amanda, her daughter. Dr. Hart arranges a lunch at the Terrace Garden so she and Amanda could talk and spend time together.
Very good! Yes, the theme of the story, "Amanda and the Wounded Birds" is 'saying what you have to say - even if that's not always easy.'
So class, the theme of the story is...?
Oh! Um... saying what you have to say even if that's not always easy?
