Storyboard Text

  • Beauty Standards: Everyone is affected by them
  • Women are held up to unrealistic expectations Used to use waist-to-hip ratio is an honest indicator of fertility women today see images of unrealistic body standards that require a completely flat abdomen, a tiny waist
  • Men are held up to unrealistic standards. Many men see media images that glorify low levels of body fat and high levels of muscle. This also plays into masculinity norms that emphasize toughness, stoicism, and self-sufficiency.
  • The media encourages these beauty standards. Heavy Instagram use correlates with depressive symptoms, general anxiety, physical appearance anxiety, self-esteem, and body image disturbance
  • Advertisements should promote love and self-acceptance for everyone instead of idealizing one type of person. We could also encourage healthier images of people on the social media sites.
  • Many people report increased body dissatisfaction along with a more depressed mental state and lower self-esteem. This could be changed if we change the media and start educating people about body positivity.
