  • The City of San Francisco, California is a Shipping port. They needed wood. So they needed to get it from Washington.
  • In Walla Walla Valley farmers Harvested Wheat and Hops.
  • Lumber and shipping towns were made. Tacoma, Olympia
  • And Seattle. These towns grew.
  • White Men and Native Americans operate together in the fields.
  • Ships pulled piles of logs to San Francisco.
  • The Pacific Ocean and Washington's rivers were filled with fish.
  • Fishing changed when Robert Hume built a plant that used cans and high heat to save fish.
  • The Pioneers and the Native Americans would sell these fish .
  • Salmon runs of which were on Columbia river were in decline by 1900.
  • In the Cascade Ms and the Puget sound lowlands Coal was discovered
  • Two towns, Cle Elum and Roslyn were created
  • Lots of cultures such as Chinese,English and Wales, and African Americans came to dig coal.
  • The discovery of good coal in 1886 in Kittitas County led to growing of Roslyn coal fields.
  • Coal Mining became very important in Washington int the 1900's
