Ashoka, the grandson of Chandragupta was the third ruler of the Mauryan Empire around 265 BCE. Ashoka made some very strict rules. There were death penalties from some very minor crimes. He wanted to expand his empire "by force". He set out and conquered many kingdoms.
How can you be so happy after all the destruction that has been created? You have nothing.
Kingdom of Kalinga was the last Kingdom the the Mauryan Empire and Ashoka had to conquer it. Kalinga was also the most resistant and therefore they went to war!
Thank you all for joining me here. Today I have a important message for you all from me. I want to tell you that I feel really bad about all the destruction and loss I have created. I am now a Buddhist and encourage all of you to join.
They fought hard, that was for sure but in the end.... The Mauryan Empire won! This meant that now hundreds and thousands of Kalinga's were massacred or sold into slavery.
Ashoka was remorseful when he looked around and saw all the damage and loss he had caused. One day he saw a Buddhist monk meditating. He was confused on how the man was so happy after all that had happened, all the destruction.
Ashoka officially announced that he became a Buddhist. He is stopping the use of war as a conflict and leading a peaceful and non-violence life. Ashoka encouraged many of his followers to join Buddhism
Going forward, Ashoka followed basic Buddhist principles and teachings. He had them inscribed on pillars and rocks. Ashoka was also open to other religions in his Empire.
