The crowd begins to arrive. All the families from around the village gather in the center of the small town between the bank and the post office and the tradition of the lottery begins.
A white piece of folded paper is chosen out of the black box; townswoman Tessie Hutchinson is selected. ¨Tessie,¨ Mr. Summers said. There was a pause, and then Mr. Summers looked at Mr. Bill Hutchinson and showed him the unfolded piece of paper.
Literary Term - Irony
The crowd gathers around Tessie to give her her ¨award¨ for winning the lottery by being stoned to death.
Tessie died a long and painful death due to the towns tradition of the lottery. Now the town will move on and do the same thing next year.
Irony is when something unexpected happens. In this case, normally, the owner would take their pet for a walk, but here, the dog is taking the owner for a walk.
