"I hate my job, that I am always travelling, eating crappy food & worrying about missing my train."
The Family Duty
"Oh God it's 6:30am I am going to be late for work"
Gregor wakes up to find himself turned into a vermin.I think the description of the bug is very important to the story as it describes him as having a hard shell and many little legs. This symbolizes the events that have taken place in his life which has led him to this point. He has had to deal with so much in his life that has led to him having a exterior. I think this is why he doesn't freak out because he understands his life is in misery. This sets the tone of the story.
"Gregor don't you want to go somewhere?"
"Gregor!!Gregor!! Get up! Are you sick?!"
"Gregor open the door, I beg of you"
"Well there is still some hope; once I've got the money together to pay off my parents' debt to him-another 5 or 6 years I suppose..." Gregor is still not reacting to his transformation he is contemplating why he is in this position & dreams of making changes to his life in the future. He is trying to come to terms as he is at a low point in his life. He hates his job but has to work because his parents owe his boss money, his parents are his first priority and he has no choice in his life.
Reality & Fear
"He is not well believe me
"Open the door!!!"
"That was the voice of an animal"
This speech in the story is significant because he has never been late or missed a day of work in 15 years as it is his duty and responsibility to the family to work & make money. He shows us that he is a good son, he is the breadwinner and is not in charge of his own destiny as he has to work for his family.
"It is shocking what can suddenly happen to a person" ..."I will open the door now"
His family calling him shows what his relationships are like with each character. This part in the story plays an important role as we learn that his sister loves & cares for her brother, his father is angry he is not up for work as he needs to pay their debts, his mother is reminding he needs to go to work as hey need the money. Work & money are shown as important elements here. The door is significant as it is the only thing separating him from his family & his secrets.
It is evident that the Chief's Clerk thinks very little of Gregor as he calls him a thief, liar and an animal. It signifies that he thinks Gregor is worthless. This is a play on words as Gregor is actually not a human although the Chief does not know it. This also proves that Gregor has very little reason to like his job as he has to deal with the Chief's Clerk who obviously hates him.
After contemplating his life & situation he finally comes to terms with his "metamorphosis". He explains that people change & its surprising what the process and the final outcome of change looks like. He went from being a man to a bug his life digresses as he hates what he does what he has become & this state of mind he is in transforms him to what he is and what has happened to him. He can no longer go on living this way something had to change in order for him to get out he has to open the doors to the future.
