Engel v. Vitale was a case in 1962. This case involved a school in New York that started their day with the Pledge and a prayer. A parent sued on behalf of his child saying that by doing the prayer, it went against the first amendment.

Issue: The issue was that having the time for prayer in school violates the first amendment. This was thought to have forced religion on some students, which was why the parent was upset.

Outcome: 8:1 ruled that it went against the first amendment
