People had to hunt and gather to get food to eat. The men hunted animals and the woman gathered nuts and berries.
The early humans realized that seeds planted in the ground would sprout new plants. It was probably the woman who realized this is because the woman were around the plants while gathering the food.
When people learned how to plant food they wanted to plant the best plants. They would see that one plant was big and the other one was smaller. They would plant the seeds from the larger plant so they would have more large plants. This is called domestication.
The early humans also domesticated animals. They domesticated lots of different animals to make them more useful.
Once people planted plants and raised animals they needed to stay in one place to protect their plants and animals. They didn't have to move around any more to find food.
The best place to settle was by water sources because the plants and animals need water. Water adds lots of nutrients in the soil, which helped their plants. Then they could grow more food.
