Soon, Alana starts finding errors, or inconsistencies in the emails. Evan asked Jared to help him repair those emails, but, after their fight, he refuses. He also threatens to expose Evan, who threatens to expose the fact that he was a part of the scheme. So, he decides to come clean.
Evan tries to apologize to Alana, but Alana says she had doubted his statements that he was his best friend from the beginning. So, he shows her the letter he wrote for his doctor, claiming it was a suicide note from Connor. Alana immediately posts it on the Connor Project's website.
Distraught, Evan rushes to the Murphys' house. There, he finds them arguing about the real reason Connor committed suicide. This was because they discovered they were the target of many hate comments saying that it was their fault Connor committed suicide. So, Evan comes clean. He tells the Murphys that he made it all up, and, in disgust and pain, they walk away.
Evan finds his mother awaiting him when he returns home, and he tells him that he saw the letter online, immediately realizing that it was one of the letters he had written for his therapist. She apologizes to him for not paying attention to how much he was hurting and promises to always be there for him.
1 YEAR LATER- Evan begins working at a Pottery Barn to earn money to eventually go to college. He contacts Zoe, who he has not spoken to in a year. They meet up at the Connor Murphy Memorial Orchard. Evan apologizes again for the pain he caused Zoe's family. She forgives him, telling him that it also positively affected her family.
The theme of Dear Evan Hansen would be "You will be found." Often in the story, the characters discuss issues such as anxiety, depression, and suicide. They discuss how, with the love and support of your peers, you can get through anything. A song in the musical states " Even when the dark comes crashing through When you need a friend to carry you And when you’re broken on the ground You will be found." This theme is also evident in many situations in the book. When Evan's mother finds out about the letter posted online, she promises she will always be there for him and they will fight through it together. This idea is also neglected to some people throughout the story. For instance, Connor was not given help even when he needed it most. This was one of the reasons the Murphy family was under fire near the end of the story.
