Plinka is a political prisoner serving a sentence of 20 years in a Soviet gulag in the Siberian tundra.
That's the last straw!
The guards torment Plinka everyday. They curse and demean her. Plinka feels like she is alone and that she will die here before her sentence is over.
Will this horror never end?
The guards force Plinka to run around the camp before her meals and raise her quota. Plinka is slowly starving to death because she can not complete her work.
The guards beat her mercilessly. She considers fighting back but knows that it will only cause her more pain in the end.
Plinka returns to her bunk and sees the horrible conditions she and the other prisoners are forced to endure. The bunk smells of unwashed bodies. Children cry from hunger and mothers cry becuase they have nothing to give their children. Plinka realizes she isn't alone in her struggle and that if the prisoners work together, they have a better chance of survival.
Plinka serves her sentence and is able to return home to her family. She will always remember her time in the gulag and the strength she gained from the experience.
