  • On July 2 1863, Gen. Lee made a plan and said they can win if they capture Little Round Top from the Union forces. Then, from their Gen. Lee's troops could easily fire down at the line of Union forces. The Union and Confederate troops fought viciously for control of Little Round Top.  The fighting was particularly fierce on the south side of the hill. There the 20th Maine led by Colonel Joshua Chamberlain battled the 15th Ala-bama led by Colonel William Oates.Eventually, the Union forced the Confederate's to pull back from Little Round Top.

The fighting lasted until nightfall but, the Confederate's assault on Cemetery Hill was unfortunately unsuccessful.  As for Culp's Hill, the Confederate's managed to take a few trenches. By the day's end, the Union forces held a strong defensive position.
