  • In Chapter One of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nick visits Tom and Daisy Buchanan's elaborate estate. Nick is amazed at how fabulously wealthy Tom and Daisy are.

  • In the second chapter of Fitzgerald's novel, we find out where Tom's mistress, Myrtle, and her husband live. They live in a rundown apartment above their auto repairs shop. Myrtle and her husband, who live in the Valley of Ashes are much less fortunate than those on East Egg.

  • The sixth chapter introduces Dan Cody when a younger Gatsby helps him sail his boat. The wealthy Dan Cody eventually takes Gatsby under his wing and gives him a proper upbringing. This is where Gatsby learns all about the American dream and what it will take to achieve it.
