Moving westward to Texas: •Good farming land for cotton • Increased U.S. land west of Mississippi •Expanded trade
Impact on Mexico: • Granted Austin land •Austin agreed to chose only moral & hardworking settlers. •Settlers agreed to become mexican citizens. •They agreed to join the Catholic Church.
Texas war for independence: • Held in 1840 •Had a lasting effect on the people of the Southwest. •Spanish people had made their homes in the region •Since the days of the conquistadors in the 1500s.
The Mexican- American War: •By 1846, from 80,000 to 100,000 Mexicanos, or Mexican citizens, lived in the territories • Given up by Mexico in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. •Most of these people remained in the Southwest and became U.S. citizens. •Texas gained its independence from Mexico in 1836.
