The village gathers in the square, this is between the office and the bank. They await for the lottery to begin. Then, Mr. Summers walks to the front of the crowd with a black box filled with blank strips of paper, with only one that has a black dot on it.
Mr. Summers opens the black and the lottery starts. The head of each family goes up and selects a piece of paper.
After a moment of silence, the family heads (the husbands) open their slips of paper. Immediately, everyone looks around o see who got the black dot. Mr. Hutchinson turns out to be the one to get the black dot, and his wife, Tessie, starts to complain that it wasn't fair. Mr. Summers talks to her calmly and instructs Harry to take the families papers and put them back int he box.
After having the papers placed back inside the box, the whole family steps forward one at a time to pick their papers. The first ones to open their papers are the kids, and they all had blank papers.
Then it is time for Mr. and Mrs. Hutchinson. Mr. Hutchinson's paper is blank, and Mrs. Hutchinson tries to hide the paper so that others can't see the black dot.
The villagers crowd around her with stones, and start throwing them at her. She pleads that is wasn't right, but they don't listen and press on.
