The conflicts that make up the Hundred Year War began in 1337. French King Philip VI captured the English controlled town of Guyenne in NE France. The English king, Edward III, then claimed the French throne as well as his English throne because his mother was the sister of French royalty. The English had dominated the battlefield with help from the new invention of the crossbow. However, an unlikely hero for the French would soon be on her way.
Joan had visions of angels from a young age, but began hearing voices when she was around 16.
Why me? Why do I keep having these visions?
You, Joan of Ark, have been chosen to lead the French to victory...by God!
Joan, go speak to the King. Tell him what I have told you. Demand that you lead the French army.
You... a peasant girl, want to see the king?!?! HA! You're joking... right?
I demand to see the king! What's so funny?
Joan explained how she has had visions almost all her life and about what the angel told her. The king was skeptic at first, but he eventually trusted her.
After many tries, the guards finally let Joan see the king.
So let me get this straight. An angel told you that you were chosen, by God, to lead the French army?
Yes, God has sent me to lead France to victory. Don't you believe me?
I will cut my hair short so I can hide it in my helmet.
You will begin training right away. No one can know you are a girl, or the soldiers will mock you instead of following orders.
