This is my first day at a German school. There is a lot of weird things i don't understand here!
Welcome to Germany. Lets go to class and you can ask questions and learn some of the things you don't understand!
Welcome to today's class. Today we will be learning all about what Dominik has questions about since he is new.
What is that weird B looking letter?
Good question Dominik. If you are talking about what is on the board, it is called an eszett. It stands for 2 s's in a row, e.g. Fußball means Fussball without the eszett.
I was also wondering why you have 2 dots above some letters? Like what i have just drawn on the board.
In the German language, you sometimes get these dots above a vowel. For example above a u, a, o etc. The two dots are called umlets. It means an e is after the letter if not written with umlets. It just shows how lazy we Germans are, trying to limit how much we write.
Finally, why does the German language have three different the's?
The 3 different the's (der, die and das), are used differently. Der is put for a the before a masculine word, die is put for a the before a feminine word, and das is put for a the before a neutral word. It is a little bit like how the English language has 3 different there's (there, their, they're).
