As Christianity spread in the Middle Ages, there have been many conflicts between the Popes and Kings. Power had always tended to be the reasons for those conflicts. Here is a tragic story about Pope Gregory and Emperor Henry.
One day Emperor Henry had decided he wanted to pick his own bishop. He felt like he didn't have that much power over his area anymore.
I would like to pick my bishop, my power seems to be decreasing over time due to you Popes.
No, you kings could not pick your own bishop. These bishops are only picked by religious officials.
Henry IV was upset about this, he had decided to convince the German Bishops to remove Pope Gregory.
Would it be worth it?
You and your mens need to remove Pope Gregory from his position and I will give each and every one of you guys 32 more wages.
Soon after Emperor Henry realize that this wouldn't' benefit him and had headed on a trip to Italy. He had gone to apologize to the Pope.
Oh, what have I done? This isn't going to help me or benefit me in any way. I must apologize to the Pope immediately!
As he had tried to apogizing to Pope Gregory. Pope Gregory did not accept it so, for 3 days Emperor Henry was outside in the snow barefooted and trying to apologize.
Pope Gregory will not accept your apologies, after what you have tried doing.
I am so sorry for what I have done and said. Please, let me back to the church I know I had made a mistake.
After awhile Pope Gregory had acpect Emperor Henry's apologizes. He had welcomed him back to the crunch and he had shown how powerful popes are.
Please, tell Emperor Henry that I accept his apologies and that he is welcome back to the church. This had shown how much power I truly have as a pope.
