After Augustus finds out he will not have very much left to live, he used his wish to fly Hazel, himself and Hazel's mother to Amsterdam to meet Peter Van Houtten and to receive some answers about what happens to characters after the book, 'An Imperial Affliction'.
Augustus and Hazel arrived to Amsterdam. When they came to Peter Van Houtten's house, he was very intoxicated and were telling Hazel and Augustus that they basically were the whiney babies of the world and can't deal with the fact that he didn't have an answer to their question and also were spoiled with their treatments.. After that, his assistant apologized for Peter's behavior and offered to take Hazel and Augustus to the Anne Frank House to make up for his actions.
After the Anne Frank house, VanHoutten's assistant offered to pay for a reservation at a fancy restraunt in Amsterdam and Augustus and Hazel took that offer to just be alone with each other to talk. They talked about many things such as what they believe what happens after death, and about An Imperial Affliction. After they finished their food they went back to Augustus' room and had some fun before they had to go back home.
When Hazel and Augustus arrived back from Amsterdam, Augustus was rushed to the hospital because of chest pains. When Hazel arrived to the hospital to see Augustus, his mother tells Hazel she only wants family to be in the room, which was the same thing Hazel's parents wanted when she was rushed to the hospital. She respected his mother's wishes and sat in the waiting room to be close just in case something happened.
When Augustus gets out of the hospital, he asked for Hazel and Isaac to meet him at an auditorium at night, very late. He also told them to have speeches written down about what they would give to him at his funeral. They were both a bit confused but Gus explained how when his actual funeral comes he wouldnt be able to hear them and wanted to hear them while he still could. After they gave the speeches, they both hugged Augustus and cried for a bit and returned home.
A few days later..Augustus passed away. Hazel receives a call from his mother in the middle of the night letting her know. Hazel calls Isaac to tell him. When she arrives at the funeral, it began. AT the beginning, she startled when Peter Van Houtten whispered in her ear, in her words, "a bunch of horse crap". It turned out, Augustus had sent a letter to him about Hazel and his last words for her and he asked for him to help him with he writing so he could give it to her before he passed but was not able to and Peter attended to give Hazel the finished letter and then the book ends.
