Cuba revolted against Spain; it was not successful but in 1886 the Cuban people forced Spain to abolish slavery. After slavery was abolished, the U.S. invested millions into the sugar cane plantations.
Jose Marti Jose Marti was Cuban poet and journalist who launched a revolution against Spain in 1895. He dedicated his life to achieving independence for Cuba. He was kicked out of Cuba at the age of 16 due to his revolutionary activities. His revolution was based around guerrilla war tactics. (destroying property, especially American-owned sugar mills and plantations.
U.S.S. Maine President McKinley ordered the U.S.S. Maine to Cuba to bring home American citizens in danger from the fighting and to protect American property. On February 15, 1898 the U.S.S. Maine exploded in Havana Harbor in Cuba. Over 260 men were killed.
Yellow Journalism Yellow journalism is journalism that exaggerates facts. U.S. newspapers used yellow journalism to blame Spain for the explosion of the U.S.S. Maine although there was not proof. Decades later it was discovered that the explosion was an accident. The yellow journalism enraged the American public and pressured the president and congress to declare war on Spain.
Spanish-American War On April 20th 1898 America declared war on Spain. The war lasted 6 months although fighting only lasted 15weeks. The war was an easy victory for the United States. A cease-fire (no fighting) was signed on August 12, 1898. On December 10, 1898 a peace treaty was signed.
