It all started with Rome's first Triumvirate of 3 rulers - Caesar, Crassus, and Pompey. They each had equal power but then then Crassus and Pompey were concerned with Caesar.

Pompey told Caesar to resign but it did not work.
After refusing to resign they go to war and Caesar defeats Pompey. But then Caesar's dead body was then found on March 15, 44 BC.

After Caesar's death the next Triumvirate was formed by his friend Marc Antony, his adopted son Octavian and one of his top generals Marcus Lepidus.
I am Mark Antony, and this is my love Cleopatra. Right now she is taking her "needed" beauty sleep. On yeah and this man next to me is Caesar's adopted son, Octavian.
This triumvirate did not last long. Lepidus retired and Marc Antony and Octavian got into a fight.
