  • Look, I found Gold!!!
  • Major Population Increase

  • The Gold Rush Started January 24th, 1848 in the tailrace of a lumber mill with James W. Marshall finding shiny metal 
  • Raiders Want It All
  • Look guys! We can just kick these guys off and live on their land!!
  •  The news of gold brought some 300,000 people to California from the rest of the United States and abroad.
  • All the Mining Harmed Everything
  • We're gonna get so much money!
  •  The Gold Rush had severe effects on Native Californians and resulted in a precipitous population decline from disease, genocide and starvation.
  • Hard Ending
  • Waste of life, we didn't even gain anything.
  • Whole indigenous societies were attacked and pushed off their lands by the gold-seekers, called "forty-niners". There were little to no vigilantes in the town to save everyone 
  • Although the mining caused environmental harm, more sophisticated methods of gold recovery were developed and later adopted around the world.
  • We have been trying forever I am doubting this!
  • Gold worth tens of billions of today's dollars was recovered, which led to great wealth for a few. However, many returned home with little more than they had started with.
