For seven nights the narrator sneaked into the old mans bed room and cast a single beam of light on the old mans vulture eye but it was always closed and the narrator had no urge to take the mans life. The narrator did not hate the man just the eye.
One on the eighth night the narrator sneaked into the old mans room and when he tried to open the lantern his hand slip and shook the latch waking the old man up.
The old man wakes up and the narrator sees the old mans eye and freaks out. He pulls the old man off the bed and smothers him.
After the narrator smothered the old man he put the body in the tub and cut it up.
After the narrator got done cutting up the body he barried the old man under the floor boards.
In the end the narrator began to freak out when the cops came and he thought he was hearing the heart beat under the floor but it was his own and he thought the police were mocking him because it was so loud to him he did not under stand how the police couldn't hear it. He then thought they knew and turned himself in and showed the cops the body.
