DeLacey descended from a good family in France, where he lived for many years in affluence
He had a son, Felix and a daughter, Agatha
They lived happily in Paris
Safie's father, a Turkish merchant, lived in Paris too. But one day, he was seized by the government, for whom he previously worked, and was tried and condemned for death on the same day that Safie came to join him in Paris from Constantinople
The injustice of this sentence was an outrage to the people of Paris - they believed his religion and wealth were the cause of his condemnation, not the alleged crime
Felix, by chance, was present at the trial - he was outraged and vowed to help the Turk escape.
Felix finally managed to enter the prison, finding the Turkish man awaiting his execution in chains. He told him of his plans to help him escape, and the Turk offered wealth to reward him. But Felix refused.
Later, Felix met Safie who visited her father in prison. He fell in love with her. The father saw this, and in an attempt to ensure that Felix would follow through in helping him , he promised him Safie's hand in marriage. Felix politely refused, but inwardly dreamt of the day when he might marry Safie.
