These guardians are responsible for protecting her chastity; these spirits are called "Sylphs." The sylphs Ariel ends her dream with a warning that a horrible event is in her future, exclaiming that she should beware men.
Beware of man!!

Belinda goes on a leisurely boat ride with a large group. She outshines everyone on the boat with her beauty. A man by the name of Baron takes notice to her and becomes determined to steal a lock of her hair.
Ariel accompanies Belinda on the boat ride, but remains uneasy as he remembers that something bad lies in her future. He calls together a team of sylphs to protect Belinda. Ariel himself will protect her dog, Crispissa will protect her hair, Brillante is assigned her earrings. Many more sylphs are called on to protect Belinda and await her fate.
Once the boat docks, the passengers get off and continue socialize. Belinda, the Baron, and a few other men begin a game of cards. During this more intimate interaction, Baron is reminded of his desire to steal a lock of hair. Belinda's sylphs try desperately to ward off Baron's shears.
After defending Belinda's hair, Ariel and the other sylphs eventually give up and allow the Baron to cut off a lock of Belinda's hair.
