Storyboard Text

  • I had to pay an extra tariff to get this box into the country. It was awful. I wish there was another way.
  • Before the 16th amendment was ratified, the government got money through tariffs. Nobody was very happy with the system.
  • On February 3, 1913, the 16th Amendment was created as a new, more effective way to generate government income instead of tariffs.
  • The country needs to be able to collect income tax to fund new roads and the army. Let's make the 16th Amendment!
  • IRS stands for Internal Revenue Service and was created to enforce income tax laws. These changes were made directly after the ratification of the 16th Amendment.
  • Ever since, every paycheck has a small portion taken out and given to the government in the form of income tax. The IRS was also made to regulate this tax.
  • I worked hard for this money! You cannot have it!
  • Some people do not like the 16th Amendment  because it takes their money.
  • I apologize, sir. We must collect income tax.
  • Others, however, like the benefits the 16th Amendment offers.
  • This road is awesome! Yay, 16th Amendment!
  • ...and that's the story of the 16th Amendment! Income tax and the IRS continue to provide income for the national government.
