Protagonist is Mathilde Loisel. Antagonist is Her greed and desire for wealth and status. It is January 18 in her average home and at the Ministrial Ball.
Mme Loisel was invited to the Ministrial Ball but is highly upset by the invite. She has nothing to wear, nor does she know that her husband is saving money for a gun, but now plans to give the money to her.
Mme Loisel buys a dress with the money that her husband gave to her. She borrows a necklace from Mme Forestier. She appears at the ball looking more beautiful than anyone but once she arrives home, she realizes that the necklace is gone.
Theme and Climax
10 years later, Mathilde meets Mme. Forestier, but Mme. Forestier does not recognize her. Mathilde admits to losing and replacing the necklace, and this is when she finds out that the necklace was a fake and was only ever worth about 500 francs.
Mme. Loisel is surprised to find out that her friend isn't as rich (money wise) as she thought.
