Wu came to Emperor Taizong's court when she was 13. Becoming one of his favorites.
In 649, Emperor Taizong dies, bringing his son, Gaozong, into rule. Unfortunately, Gaozong's chief wife couldn't bare heirs, letting Wu give him those heirs.
Soon after Wu was brought back to the palace, Gaozong different from a stroke, weakening him. Wu used her political skills and gave Gaozong efficient ways he could improve the government.
When Gaozong died, his son took the throne, but Wu thought otherwise. Whoever opposed her would be eliminated or removed.
In 690, Wu took power, started the Zhou Dynasty, and named herself the Holy and Divine Emperor.
In 705, leading ministers and generals invaded the palace causing Wu to retire to another palace and her son taking the throne.
