Lizabeth and her brother were about to throw pebbles at Mr.s Lottie, but instead, Lizabeth sees the marigolds and wants to throw the pebbles at the flowers.
Lizabeth hears her parents talking and since her father does not have a job and her mother is making all of the money for the family, he starts to cry. This makes Lizabeth sad and angry she feels like she was about to cry.
When Lizabeth runs out of her house because of how mad she was, she went to Mrs. Lottie's yard. Lizabeth starts to destroy Mrs. Lottie's marigolds and realizes that her childhood is gone and her adulthood began when Mrs. Lottie came and saw what had happened. They looked at each other deeply and ever since then Lizabeth had felt so bad for what she had done.
