When king Charles the II reign there was a rule of guaranteed freedom which meant that prisoners have a say and the king can't just put someone in indefinite captivity without a judge or a reason. This was a start to removing absolute monarchy
When Charles the II died his throne was inherited by his his brother James the II Which was catholic. And the parliament didn't really like him being catholic.
King James the II tried to further endorsing catholicism By raising catholics to the parliament and a lot of his actions to endorse catholicism was against the law.
