"... to suspect that every night, just at twelve, I looked upon him while he slept"
"For it was not the old man that vexed me, but his evil eye."
"I then took up three planks from the flooring of the chamber..."
"...calling him by name in a hearty tone and inquiring how he had passed the night."
At midnight every night, I would sneak it to the old man's room very precisely. I would take my time and be very cautious not to wake him.
The old man's eye was like a vulture eye. It was a dull blue covered in a hideous veil. The eye made me grow furious and chilled inside.
"A shriek had been heard by a neighbor during the night"
I waited till I heard the old man's heart beat as fast as it could before I attacked. I jumped out from the shadows and covered him with the mattress till his heartbeat stopped. To make sure no one would find him I put him under the floorboards.
"I undid it just so much that a single ray of light fell upon the vulture eye."
Every morning I would talk to the old man courageously in a hearty tone. I would call him by name and inquire how he passed the night.
When knocking came at the door I was prepared for the police. I had already finished cleaning. I was very friendly with them and they never suspected a thing.
When I had my head through the door on the eighth night I slipped. When I went to open the lantern my thumb slipped and the old man awoke, he had fear in his eyes.
