  • Li is a peasant boy who was raised by a loving family in a hard working village, he helps in the field with his family.
  • Climax
  • Li is accepted into the Madame Mao's ballet academy but he doesn't perform well in his classes, he cries at night and feels homesick.
  • Falling action
  • Resolution
  • Li is defecting China to stay in America and asks Elizabeth if he can marry her but Counel Zhang wants Li back in China. Li is allowed to stay in America but cannot go back to China. 
  • Li breaks up with Elizabeth and focuses on ballet much more and then becomes famous. 
  • After a few years of living in America, the Council Zhang is impressed at how Li still makes China proud. As a reward Li is permitted to go back to China.
