Dred Scott was a slave, but he desired to be free. He believed that he had the rights to be free due to "Once Free, Always Free".

He went to court in order to fight for his freedom.
Dred Scott's case made it all the way to the Supreme Court of the US.
It was decided by the Supreme Court that Dered Scott would not gain his freedom due to slaves being considered property and therefore having no rights in court or in the country.
The decision increased tensions between the North and South sparking worry over keeping peace in the US
