  • Us southern farmers relied heavily on rivers for transportation of our goods.
  • Our climate is always nice and warm and we have a nice long growing season with fertile soil too!
  • These spirituals had hymns and psalms about the hardships of slavery, the songs had a call and response structure.
  • Political/Cultural
  • Thousands of slaves would gather for Underground Railroad spirituals.
  • There was a new invention which was the Cotton Gin that made the production of cotton easier and profitable.
  • The South also wanted low tariffs on goods when the North wanted a high tariff.
  • Slavery fueled the economy of the south, our population had doubled by 1830.

  • Wealthy planters that owned over 20 slaves were at the top of the social pyramid.
  • Small planters with few slaves were next, then poor farmers with no slaves, and then at the bottom were slaves who had no rights or freedom.
  • Political/Cultural
  • Our breakfasts normally consisted of potatoes,beef, eggs, toast, biscuits, hotcakes, corn bread, coffee, and tea. Dinner had the same food but in larger portions.
  • The food we ate was normally bland and was spoiled most of the time.
  • The South had a very long growing season with cash crops of tobacco, cotton, rice, and sugar.
