  • "So young, and so untender" (I, I, 108)
  • King Lear decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters. His plan is to give up all of his responsibilities to them, so he can relax in his old ages and just spend time with his girls. In order to decide who gets the biggest portion, he holds a test for whoever says they love him most.
  • "Five days we do allot thee for provision To shield thee from diseases of the world. And on the sixth to turn thy hated back Upon our kingdom. If on the next day following Thy banished trunk be found in our dominions, The moment is thy death. Away! By Jupiter,  This shall not be revoked." (I, I, 175 - 181)
  • "Royal Lear, Whom I have ever honored as my king, Loved as my father, as my master followed, As my great patron thought on in my prayers—"  (I, I, 142- 145)
  • King Lear's two eldest daughters, Goneril and Regan, kiss up to him and flatter him with their kind words.
  • "Give me the letter, sir" (I, II, 40)
  • Cordelia, Lear's youngest but most favoured child, is unable to put her love for him into words, so she refuses to partake in the contest out of shyness. Out of rage; thinking it is an act of disrespect, King Lear disowns and banishes her for this reason. He then decides to give Cordelia's share of the Kingdom to be divided over the two other girls.
  • "Put on what weary negligence you please, You and your fellow servants. I’ll have it come to question. If he distaste it, let him to our sister" (I, III, 13 - 15)

As Gloucester reads the letter he becomes worried and confused about him.
  • Goneril is tired of her father living in her Palace. He has over stuffed it with 100 of his knights who are young and loud. She has told her steward, Oswald to tell the other servants to begin to treat Lear coldly so he gets the message. She also chooses herself to ignore him by pretending to be ill in her room.
