  • We've got all this debt to pay off, if only there was a way to pay for it...
  • Atmosphere
  • Let's just raise taxes, not like we're the ones paying them anyway.
  • But we're already struggling!
  • The National Assembly
  • They will have to listen to the 3rd estate now...
  • The king should not have unlimited power!
  • Bastille
  • Did you hear about the king?
  • Yea, he's locked himself in his palace I heard.
  • Life, Liberty, Fraternity!
  • The first and second estates of France consisted of the wealthy, and did not have to pay any taxes. The 3rd estate was the vast majority of the population and much poorer, yet still had to pay high taxes, which led to the French Revolution.
  • Church Property
  • You can't do that! Spain and Portugal won't like this...
  • The National Assembly was formed by the 3rd estate, to represent the majority of the French population. They opposed the heavy taxation on the 3rd estate and worked towards giving more rights to the people of the 3rd estate. There were three groups: Radicals, who wanted large changes, Moderates who wanted a small amount of change, and Conservatives who favored the king and wanted little change.
  • Reign of Terror
  • That guy over there!
  • Bastille day is July 14th, and commemorates the day that the king lost power when rioters in Paris broke into the Bastille fortress and stole the weapons stored.
  • Napoleon
  • To pay for the large debt that Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette collected during their reign, The new French government had to take hold of church properties and sold them back to members of the 3rd estate. This angered much of the church officials and nearby christian countries.
  • The state is going to have to take ownership of this church, we have a lot of debt to pay off.
  • Robespierre, the then leader of France traveled throughout the country, searching for people still loyal to the old king, People accused would be put to death by guillotine, until he himself was captured by a rebellion and put to death in the same way.
  • Is there anyone here with loyalty to the king?
  • Napoleon Bonaparte became emperor of France after the Reign of Terror ended, believing that he can bring stability to France. He led a large military campaign through Europe until he was defeated by the Russian military and was exiled for the rest of his life.
