Storyboard Text

  • Hey Dad? Why do we need phrases and clauses? Its really confusing to me
  • Because son, phrases adds that extra thump in your writing that makes your teacher go crazy! While clauses can be complete sentences and also add extra detail into your writing.
  • What about semicolons and colons?
  • Well semicolons are used to combine two sentences together, while colons are used for the opposite, to separate two complete sentences.
  • Wait what about how dependent clauses are 'dependent' on independent clauses?
  • Well because without an independent clause, they are not a complete sentence on their own you see.
  • Well then what's the point of a subordinating conjunction?
  • It's what begins a dependent clause.
  • Hmmmm, I don't think that's right.
  • I think I'm right, but okay.
  • Of course it is, my dad said it!
  • Yeah, my dad knows what he's talking about.
  • Well, I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about.
  • Alright, thanks dad! I was so confused at first, but now I'm all good!
  • A colon is used to separate two complete sentences. For example: I went to the store and bought a lot of fruit: peaches, kiwis, etc.
  • Well yeah son, you use a semicolon when you have two independent clauses. For example: I have a big test tomorrow; I can't go out tonight.
