The hunt for the different groups presented similar reactions within those involved. In the era of McCarthyism, people were accused by McCarthy and others which forced the people around them to disassociate in order to protect themselves. In the Crucible, those accused of witchcraft would name others to protect themselves and would accuse them of crimes of greater consequence.
I cannot afford to be associated with you anymore Henry, leave me alone.
I saw Goody Good with the Devil she signed her name in blood!
In both of these instances, McCarthyism and the Crucible, it was seen as an age in which the enemy had to be something other than the people themselves. Within the Crucible, Parris accepted that it was witchcraft because in doing so he was not at fault. His household would be seen as McCarthyism's America and it was being attacked by witchcraft (foreign people) instead of his niece and daughter being in the wrong.
It's those darn foreigners coming into our country and doing this to us. America ain't got no problems of its own!
These girls have been affected by the Devil! Witchcraft is the only answer for these sins!
