In his cell,to clear his mind Yakov recieved a newspaper cut in strips but he was not allowed to read. He remembered what he knew about Espinoza and started to recite Hebrew on his cell,He could be heard by the guard Kogin but Yakov didn´t care.

Yakov remembers the life he had with Risl,how they got married and the desire of Raisl to leave Rusia with Shmuel and him but he never did because he wanted to sabemoney. Finally,she left him.
Yakov tried to mantain his mental sanity and to keep track of the passing days he used pieces of wood but he become very depressed.He shreds his clothes although he recieved more clothes, Yakov feels chilled for weeks.
The indictment was ready and Yakov was in the courthouse.He again proclaimed himself innocent but Gubeshov told him that if he is convicted, he will spend the rest of his life in a solitary confinement and asked him to confess the crime but he refused to do that and Yakov returned to the prison.
