I was never interested in ghost stories until I came upon a village named Sleepy Hollow. Sleepy Hollow is a drowsy, dreamy place-a place of hauntings and superstitions, and it is where I heard a story about Ichabod Crane.
Ichabod Crane is a very tall man with long arms, small head, huge ears, and big green eyes. He was absorbed in his book about History of Witchcraft. He has a fascination with the dark arts. Two ladies came by and mentioned the Wailing Widow. Ichabod didn't hear the widow, just the wind.
That wasn't wind. That was the widow's ghost. She always shrieks when a terrible storm is coming.
Ichabod had finished giving Katrina Van Tassel a singing lesson at her house and was staying for tea. They talk about Sleepy Hollow, where he was staying, and being a schoolmaster.
CLIP! CLIP! CLIP! Brom Bones came with his black horse Daredevil to take Katrina riding.
But don't you get paid?
My wages are hardly enough for a loaf of bread. But I am quite rich in the mind. I've read so many books--
Ichabod has dinner with his host Mr. Van Ripper. They talk about Katrina's party, Brom Bones, Katrina, and the competition for Katrina between Ichabod and Brom Bones.
Shouldn't Brom have some competition?
Once he began courting Katrina, no other suitor dared come near.
What is that gangly grasshopper doing here?
The schoolmaster? He is an honored guest. You're just jealous.
