The story starts off with the narrator saying that he is completely sane. He states that tomorrow ids the day he dies. He says it is all because of a cat.
The narrator loved Pluto dearly, but one night in a drunken rage, the narrators cat Pluto was ignoring him. Out of anger, he grabbed Pluto and carved out its eye. Later on in another drunken state, he sees pluot and hangs him by the neck on a tree.
Later on that night, there is a fire inside of the narrators house. When the fire is burned out, one wall remains standing, and on that wall is an imprint of the cat known as Pluto
A while later, as the narrator is coming home from a bar, he meets another black cat. This black cat has an eye carved out like Pluto, but it had a marking on its stomach in the shape if a gallow.
One day as the narrator is going down the stairs, he is tripped by this black cat. In a fury of rage he tries to kill the cat, but is stopped by his wife. In anger, he turns around and kills her instead. he hides her body in the cellar.
Four days after the murder, the police come over to investigate. The narrator is very calm because he knows the body will never be found. When he taps on the bricks of his makeshift wall, he hears the cat let out a loud wail. They tear down the wall to see the cat eating the wife's dead body.
