  • Okay class today we are going to learn about the silk road. Are you ready...ok.
  • Where are we?
  • We are in China, on one of the silk routes. They used these routes to trade with ancient cultures. The was actually a network of small trade routes.
  • A Chinese explorer named Zhang Qian is often called the father of the silk road. He tried to persuade western people to form an alliance against the Huns. The Huns are China's northern enemy.
  • Silk is fiber to make cloth. Chinese silk was a luxury item. If someone told a non-Chinese person how to make silk they would be punished by death.
  • Several dangers faced traders crossing the Taklimakan Desert. Bandits often attacked travelers on the northern route between Dunhuang and Kucha. Throughout the desert, sudden sandstorms sometimes buried travelers in sand. Mirages may have lured travelers off the main path to their deaths. Ready to go back kids...okay.
  • You can die telling someone how to make silk.
