  • Days of darkness 1942: Japenese rule was indeed days of torture. Japenese soldiers used to kill Singaporeans and torture them! Some heroes showed courage during these tough times. This gave hope and inspired many people. Soon, the Japenese were forced to surrender

  • Before 1948: After Japanese rule, things were still not alright! People were homeless, sick, hungry, jobless, and helpless. Everyone wished that Singapore would gain Self-Government.

  • Being part of Malaysia meant that:-Singapore was completely free from British control-Singapore had its own state Government-Singapore Prime Minister and his team of Ministers had the power to make decisions on how to govern Singapore
  • The British started the process of granting Self-Government in 1948! The first step was to allow the people of Singapore to choose their representatives through elections! Take a look at the graph above. Do note that the Red blocks are represented by the British members chosen and the White ones are represented by Local members chosen.

  • In 1961, the Prime Minister of Malaya, Tunku Abbul Rahman, visited Singapore and suggested the idea of a merger. Prime Minister Lee welcomed the idea as it could also bring about other benefits such as more jobs for the people.However, not everyone in Singapore supported the idea.
