There was once a family that lived in North Carolina in 1918. It was a family of 4, a dad, mom, son, and a brother, named Doodle that had physical challenges and could've had the chance of being mentally challenged.
The narrator wanted a brother that he could do everything with but his brother has issues, he is extremely weak. Brother is so upset about his brothers weakness, at one point, he wanted to kill his own brother.
A scarlet ibis, a rare bird, falls out of a tree and dies. Watching the bird fall to its death gave the boys bad luck.
I did this, I'm so sorry Doodle. Please wake up.
Doodle gets killed by a tree. Brother left Doodle behind, even running faster, and when he wasn't paying anymore attention to him, Doodle gets killed.
Brother realizes that Doodle is no longer close behind him or anywhere in sight. He decides to go back and he finds Doodle down by a tree with blood on his body.
Brother realizes that he done everything out of pride. He realized that those times he was rude and selfish, he'll never get back.
