Edward Jenner found the vaccine for the deadly smallpox in 1798
Louis Pasteur proved that germs cause disease in 1864
In 1880, Charles Chamberland discovered that injected germs made you immune to the disease.
James Simpson discovered anesthetics such as chloroform in 1847. Patients found them uncomfortable however.
After 1860, the work of Florence Nightingale began to change nursing in Britain, and improve cleanliness in hospitals.
