  • Edward Jenner found the vaccine for the deadly smallpox in 1798
  • Louis Pasteur proved that germs cause disease in 1864
  • In 1880, Charles Chamberland discovered that injected germs made you immune to the disease.
  • James Simpson discovered anesthetics such as chloroform in 1847. Patients found them uncomfortable however.
  • After 1860, the work of Florence Nightingale began to change nursing in Britain, and improve cleanliness in hospitals.
