  • It begin August 23, 1943 in Russia. Germans wanted the city of Stalingrad for many reason. Invading it would cut off transportation between southern Russia. It would also be a personal victory for Hitler to conquer the place of birth for Stalin.

  • "I'm cold, hungry and were running low on supplies."
  • Stalingrad started and 330,000 of the German army's finest troops advance toward Stalingrad. They went north toward the cities suburbs and bombed the wooden housing.
  • Tactics and Weapons
  • This was one of WW2 bloodiest battles, around 800,000 people were either captured, dead, missing, or wounding. Germans pushing Soviets' into Stalingrad further, fighting over individual streets and buildings
  • Outcome
  • Germans where getting very disappointed with the battle dragging on. They faced fatigue, many losses, and soon the coming winter. In November the soviets surprised the Germans by a counter attack, by attacking their weaker flanks. But Hitler still would not allow a retreat.
  • Because the battle was in a city many street fighting weapons were used. For example German machining guns and lethal bombs were dropped without warning. The Soviets used the tactics of always keeping their front line position as close to the Germans as possible and not letting them gain land. This was called hugging.
  • Germans were unprepared for the winter, many resorted to cannibalisms for to stay alive. Then February 2 the last of the 91,000 men surrendered to the Soviets. This battle put Hitler on the defensive and many consider it to be a major turning point in the conflict.
