According to historical records, Muhammad started seeing revelations from God in forties. Especially from the angel Gabriel that he was equal to other prophets like Abraham & Moses.
YO MUHAMMAD, YOU A PROPHET!
Muhammad then went to many different cities, including Mecca and Medina, to convert many people to his ideas of peace and submission to God. Some were hesitant, but others had full devotion to his beliefs.
Later, Muhammad had his beliefs turned into a book called the Koran, which includes the Five Pillars of Islam (the acts you must do to fully practice the faith). This eventually became the basis of Islam.
Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini led a revolution in 1979 that led to a political uprising. People really liked his views since the Shah at the time was trying to modernize Iran, something most people didn't want. Everyone within Iran would soon have to abide by the laws of Islam and it would affect his or her daily life.
Men and women couldn't go out together, schools were also segregated from boys and girls, and everyone was required to wear the religious clothing involved within the Islamic faith.
People did fight back the government in a war that started in 1980, but it brought fear to many people living in the country. When anyone heard loud noises, they would hide in his or her basement to avoid being killed. Overall, Islam was used in the revolution in Iran to control people and what they did so they could never revolt against the government.
