Rainsford hears gun shots from the other island. He tries to hear it closer but, falls of the edge of the boat. He then swims to the island it was coming from. "He lunged for it; a short , hoarse cry came from his lips as he realized he had reached too far and had lost his balance".
"He heard it again; then it was cut short by another noise, crisp, staccato." After hearing the gunshots he swims to the place where it was coming from. He finds a castle on the island with two people inside it named General Zaroff and Ivan.
"If I wish to hunt, why should I not? I hunt the scum of the earth-sailors from tramp ships-lascars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels-a thoroughbred horse or hound is worth more than a score of them." After meeting the two, Rainsford and Zaroff have a little chat with each other. Zaroff explains that he lost the trill of the hunt so, he deiced to hunt humans.
"It was the shore of the sea. Across a cove he could see the gloomy gray stone of the chateau. 20 feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea..." After Zaroff hunted Rainsford for 3 days and unsuccessful traps. he deiced to run away from Zaroff.
"He could see the great hounds, and he called, “Better luck another time,” to them. Then he switched on the light. A man, who had been hiding in the curtains of the bed, was standing there." While Zaroff thought Rainsford was dead, he was then jumped by Rainsford behind the curtains.
"He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided." After fighting with Zaroff, he was killed off and fed to the dogs. He then slept in his bed with being the best bed.
