Othello is a North African Moor. He is a highly respected General of the Venetian Army. He is very powerful but he has soft heart toward his wife Desdemona.
Othello married Desdemona in secret. Desdemona's father finds out about the marriage and Othello and Brabantio get into an argument. He is told by the Duke that he must go to Cyprus to lead the Venetian Army against The Turks.
"Rude I am in my speech, And little blessed with the soft phrase of peace." (1.3.83-84). This quote tells us that Othello is nervous in his talk and is reserved when it comes to talking. Talking about feelings does not come easy to him.
